As the recession drags on more people are looking for great ways to plan birthday parties on a budget. Since party supplies are items that add up quickly, we are going to look at ways to save money on them. We start with birthday cake toppers. You can of course bake your own cake and then ice it. Neat ideas for cool birthday cake toppers that you can make at home are to bake a batch of sugar cookies, cut into shapes that will work on the birthday cake and decorate them. Another idea is to use straws or wire then cut out and decorate pieces of paper in the shapes and designs for the cake and glue them to the straws and wire to stick in the cake.

birthday candles help to make the cake and give the birthday person something to blow out and make a wish on but you do not have to go crazy and buy expensive ones. The ordinary birthday candles will do and generally cost less than $2 for a dozen or more. Keep the birthday hats simple, buy plain ones, ones on sale, or suggest to the guests it is a hat party and have them wear a crazy hat.
